Is there a work around when Disk utility won't allow erase option?

old old Mac book: Mac osx10.7.5

2GB memory, 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

ready to give away or recycle but can't erase data. Erase was grayed out so I selected erase free space with the most secure option, twice now, which takes hours. And still the Erase tab is grayed out and unresponsive. I hate to just throw it in the trash.Disk utility shows a Macintosh HD and 160.04 GB Fujitsu MHY drive

Thanks

Insert a compatible Mac OS X install DVD, restart with the C or Option key held down, run the Disk Utility from there, and install a fresh OS.
