Time Machine Issue

iMac 27" late 2012 OS Mojave - Apple Time Capsule 2012 2TB

Hi there. I thought my Time Machine was doing well in Mojave until I found out that it behaves different than in Sierra. First of all when I go into Time Machine it shows a blanc Finder page dated on the initial Time Machine backup 2018-10-10. When I scroll back then I see the correct backups however look at the timestamp (Swedish by the way) today 10.23 and 10.27 - only 4 minutes in between. Also look at the icons on timestamp page 10.27 which have changed appearance.

I have also noticed that when I go back in time only the backups with the "strange" icons ar saved. The good ones are gone. When I do a sudo tmutil listlocalsnapshots/Volumes/

then all backups previous then 20 october are gone according to the snapshots but my Time Machine still shows backups until the 10th of October, only with the strange icons.

Has anybody any idea? Bug in Time Machine / Mojave and we have to wait for the first update maybe.

Thanks to advise.

Kind regards Erwin

BIG NEWS: Time Machine is now finally working, at least for me, after Mojave 10.14.3 update!

My setup:

Brand new 2018 MBP 15" 2TB Vega 20 bought Nov 24.

Migrated from 2016 MBP 15" 2TB High Sierra to new MBP on Mojave 10.14.1 with Migration Assistant.

Time Machine on remote MacMini server (High Sierra) was NOT working anymore. Stopped after a few GBs.

10.14.2 did not help

10.14.3 has solved the issue for a full new 1.9TB Time Machine backup on MacMini.

What I did was, but don't know if it was even necessary:

  • deleted flawed Time Machine backup on MacMini
  • deleted /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
  • deleted all instances of my MacMini credentials in KeyChain
  • made a new login/connection to MacMini in Finder (afp only, no smb in keychain at the moment, if it even matters)
  • select new volume in TimeMachine Preferences pane
  • started backup
  • success after 1 day to complete full 1.9TB backup

How it works for everybody too!

This was really PAINFUL not to have a working TimeMachine anymore

I found a Time Machine log. Anybody there who can help me to read the errors in this log?

Thanks

Dec 3, 2018 8:25 AM in response to ErnieBernie65

Ah. I'm actually having the exact same problem. I even wiped out my backup disk completely, started from scratch (which was really disappointing), and was able to make a first full backup. However, after the initial backup, the automatic or manual backups are *VERY* hit and miss. I haven't been able to get a backup in the last 4 days. When Time Machine attempts to backup, I see the following:

Looking for backup disk ...

Preparing backup ...

Stopping ...

And no information is backed up at all. Then, when running the below command:

log show --predicate 'subsystem == "com.apple.TimeMachine"' --info --last 1h | grep Error

I see:

2018-12-03 09:24:14.543174-0700 0x67099Error 0x3f587 17121 0backupd: (TimeMachine) [com.apple.TimeMachine:TMLogError] Failed to remove directory '(null)', error: 14 Bad address

That's it. Nothing else regarding why it failed. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'd hate to lose all my data if something were to happen to this HDD.

So, I did find more information while logging the backup and found that, for whatever reason, the backup just becomes "canceled" for no reasons that I can see. Incomplete backups are happening with some errors but the "error: 14 Bad address" appears to happen upon both successful and unsuccessful backups. Below is a log of a non-successful automatic backup that partly worked before it was randomly canceled. Granted, this is backing up over the network so it may be a different story for ErnieBernie, but this just seems hit and miss for no reason. I should also mention these backup issues only appeared after upgrading from High Sierra to Mojave. All users still on Sierra/High Sierra have no issues at all.

Same issues here, and same lack of information for troubleshooting. I have four macs in the house, but do not get this error consistently across all four...something is definitely odd here and I think it is related to the move from AFP to SMB for the backup. I have not seen this sort of issue under AFP in the past, but *did* see this sort of behavior from SMB. Obviously, this is correlational and not causal until we can get more information. Also, the machine I see this error on most frequently is running Little Snitch - which may or may not be impacting accessing the SMB shares.

SORRY, I just realised I made a mistake, I actually performed a full TimeMachine on a second server (Synology not High Sierra)!

I'm now trying to TimeMachine on our HighSierra MacMini where we have all our other backups.

I will post results ASAP.

Again I'm so sorry for the confusion or false hopes (even if I at least now know, accidentally, that it's working perfectly on Synology).
