Is it possible to play iTunes music through different speakers than system sounds?

Hi,

I have my computer hooked up to a stereo via an external USB audio device. (My amplifier has a USB input and is recognized as another audio output option by OS X.)

However it's really irritating and junky when stupid system sounds decide to play through my stereo speakers. I do still want to get the occasional ding when, e.g., I get a new imessage or e-mail, but that's want the tiny computer speakers are for.

Is there any way to choose per-application audio output settings? (At least, any way to do this without resorting to maddening AirPlay, which seems to require that one in six songs pauses or stutters, even over a wired ethernet connection?)

(Running OS X Mojave and latest software updates as of 10/21/2018)

Thanks,

Mike
