SMC and NVRAM resets: why not just do them by default? As part of Apple's support steps, sometimes they recommend these things, usually as a last resort, to reset particular problems. Problems that I have had. Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac How to reset the SMC of your Mac My question is: what is the downside of these steps? Meaning, why wouldn't macOS simply do both of these things whenever you power off your Mac and back on again instead of requiring special 3-4 finger salutes? or if it happens before macOS loads, why not make whatever power-on layer do it automatically. Does it somehow wear out the components to reset them too frequently? if it's just boot time, it feels like a small price to pay to eliminate this from all of the Apple support scripts. If it's damaging to hardware in the long run, it would make sense.
