iTunes will not update iPhone iOS

Tools used:

  • 2012 Mac Mini, High Sierra 10.13.6
  • iTunes 12.8.0.150 (latest)
  • Apple USB to Lightning cable connected directly to Mini - no hub
  • iPhone 8 Plus 256GB, iOS 11.4.1, 98GB free

My usual process:

  • Plug phone in to Mini
  • When asked to “Download Only” or “Download and Upgrade”, I choose “Download Only” so I can do a full backup while the upgrade file downloads
  • Encrypted backup to Mini
  • When backup is complete, I select “Upgrade” on the “Summary” window in iTunes
  • The upgrade completes

For the past few days, when I click the “Upgrade” button in iTunes, it will ask me to transfer purchases to my library (which stopped after I transferred my purchases) and then there is no response from iTunes and there appears to be no activity. Subsequent presses of “Upgrade” do nothing. Everything up to this point occurs flawlessly as it always has in the past.

I have also tried to upgrade another iPhone 8 Plus on iOS 11.2.1 and tried to perform both upgrades on a MacBook Pro on High Sierra 10.13.6 and received the same result. Reboots on both devices, safe mode on the Mini make no difference. This makes me think it’s software related. I have not called Apple Support yet.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Mac mini, macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)
