recover deleted pictures from texts

I have pictures in text messages from about 2 to 3 months ago that I can not view or download. I have never done an iTunes or iCloud backup of these messages or pictures and need to recover them. They show icons when I look in info, but it just says the pictures name and picture image type, it does not show the picture or let me download them. Can I recover them somehow?
