Ilio's Vienna Symphonic Library and EXS-24

Hi,

I was visiting www.ilio.com today

http://www.ilio.com/vienna/index.html

to get a handle on the older, second generation VSL,
particularly because it is still being
sold and because it is formatted for EXS-24 (among others),
and most importantly, with the Performance Set, Pro Edition
for $2,290, I would have the ability to play legato notes.

Is there anyone out there using both the VSL and the legato
performance tool with the legato samples (admittedly, quite
an investment in money)? If I were to eventually purchase this,
it would be to use their legato samples and the legato tool (and,
of course, repeated notes without the machine gun effect,
and so forth).

Note: I have libraries for strings, brass, and woodwinds, but they
do not support a "legato tool" concept on the Macintosh for
Logic Pro's EXS-24.

Does anyone wish to venture a guess as to how long Ilio will be
selling this second generation Vienna Symphonic Library that
runs on EXS-24? I ask, of course, because I do not immediately
have thousands of dollars available at this time.

Does anyone having the performance tool wish to make a general
comments about their satisfaction? For instance, does everything
run seamlessly with EXS-24 in Logic Pro?

Thanks much,
Sys6

P.S.
My current libraries do not support a "legato tool" concept for
the Macintosh: Garritan Orchestral Strings, Westgate Studio
Enhanced Woodwind Collection, SampleTekk Brass, and
Complete Project Sam Orchestral Brass Collection.

The performance tool works much better in EXS than it does in Gigastudio... but I wouldn't count on them supporting it after they sell their last reserves of it (not that there is much need for support). I personally would get the 2nd Gen samples while they are still available (rather than get the new ones)... I don't trust when companies come out with their own sampling programs.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for you reply.

Here is a follow up question if you, or anyone happens to know it:
On my Mac Pro Intel 3.0 gHz computer, if I use the legato tool only
for the VSL strings, and use the woodwinds and brass libraries I
currently have, will I have enough processing power to hear the
virtual orchestra "live" (without any bouncing and freezing techniques
being used)?

Note that currently only one pair
of processors is used to play the audio instruments. Another pair
of processors is used to take care of the five Apple convolution
reverbs I use to place the players in a small, bright, hall. Also,
I have ample disk space.

Thanks,
Sys6

System6,

I would suggest possibly 2 things...

get another gig or two of RAM, and put your sample library on a dedicated hard drive, so the samples are not streaming from the same drive your OS in installed on.

Other than that, the legato tool for VSL works great within the EXS. But with VSL now making their own "plug-in" AI, it's my opinion that the days of the EXS instruments being available are limited.

I have no inside information, mind you, it's just common sense. The handwriting is on the wall...

I just read at another forum that they have already discontinued Opus 1. I don't know if that's true or not, but if it is, there's the proof...

I tried ilio's performance tool for the vienna library and the only reason I didn't buy it is that I didn't have the cash on me.
It's pretty flexible, and native to the library itself so using it is pretty much plug and play.
You could, of course, opt to use the vienna library with the exs24 and spend the rest of your life tweaking the sampler and the separate sample instrument editor window.

Just for clarify for others, one can literally buy only
Orchestral Cube, Pro Edition (or any of its subsets)
and not purchase the additional performance tool;
you will not get the "legato tool" functionality,
but the library would function like any other
standard, "older" library, in that you would attempt
to use different tricks of the trade to make the lines
sound more legato.

Thanks,
Sys6
