iPod Touch 2nd gen will not longer sync with newer iTunes

I did some testing on my iPod Touch 2nd generation (model A1288).

It was working no problem previously on earlier versions of iTunes.

With iTunes 12.8 (12.8.0.150) on OS X 10.13.6, iTunes gives error "invalid response received".

With iTunes 12.9 (12.9.0.164) on OS X 10.14, iTunes gives error "invalid response received".

With iTunes 12.6 (12.6.2 from https://support.apple.com/downloads/itunes) it works fine, it shows up in iTunes and can be used normally.

It looks like Apple has broken sync with the iPod Touch 2nd generation in the recent versions of iTunes (I wasn't able to test iTunes 12.7)

Apple: this needs to be fixed. Please test sync with an iPod Touch 2nd generation and iTunes 12.9 and fix the problem.

UPDATE October 26, 2018: After extensive testing I can confirm that the last version of iTunes that supports the iPod Touch 2nd generation is iTunes 12.7 (specifically I tested version 12.7.4.80).

The iPod Touch 2nd generation is definitely NOT supported in iTunes 12.8 or iTunes 12.9.

It appears that support for iOS 4 was dropped in iTunes 12.8.

This means the only way you will be able to access your iPod Touch 2nd generation is with High Sierra (OS X 10.13) or earlier running iTunes 12.7 or earlier (and it also means you'll have to somehow stop High Sierra from installing the iTunes 12.8 update). It also means the iPod Touch 2nd generation won't work at all in Mojave (OS X 10.14) as Mojave has iTunes 12.9.

I have the same problem, even went to Genius Bar and they could not get it to work on 12.8.0.150 iTunes. Mine's a 2nd gen iPod touch with iOS 4.2.1. Worked fine until the latest iTunes update through Mac App Store.

There is NOTHING WRONG with my iPod and it is a great music player that I intend to keep using. So Apple...are you listening...look into iTunes 12.8.0.150. The Internet is crawling with people having the same issue.
