It's not necessary to turn your phone off at all unless you need to correct a glitch of some sort.

Apple will send a notification badge (a red icon) to your Settings icon when it's time to do an update.

It may indeed charge a bit faster when its off since no power is being used, but you don't have to turn if off. Nothing bad will happen if you do turn it off however, but there's no real tangible benefit to doing so. The charging speed is likely unnoticeably faster when its turned off.

I never turn mine off. Just plug it in to charge overnight, and leave it on. Screen locked, and asleep.

Fully charged by morning.

What about it? You don't need to turn it off. In fact if you turn it off, and then plug it in to charge, it will turn back on.
