All Calendar events & calendars GONE

For a few days, starting a couple of weeks ago, iCloud was asking me if I wanted to sign in... or telling me I couldn't sign in, or something like that. I kept closing the window since I never use iCloud, and hoping it would go away. Around a week ago I signed in for a minute through System Preferences to see if that would make it go away... it seemed to want to sync with things on my computer, which I DO NOT want, so I unchecked things like Calendar, Photos, etc. and signed back out. I didn't really pay much attention to it since I never use the thing, just tried to get it out of my hair.

That message, whatever it was about not being able to sign in to iCloud, went away, so I assumed that solved things.

However, I believe it may have caused the problem I am having right now.

Today I went to add an event to my Calendar, which I've been using for well over a decade—note, I probably haven't used it for a couple of weeks—and discovered that my custom calendars are gone and all of my events, going back all the way to forever, are gone.

There were a couple of blank default calendars named Home and Work "On My Mac" and that was it.

I looked for a solution on the web and saw a recommendation to delete the contents of the Calendar folder and the iCal prefs, and go back to the last backup in Time Machine, so did that—after deleting, I plugged in my external hard drive and reverted the iCal prefs and the contents of the Calendar folder to my last backup (which was about a month ago, and also before the weird requests to sign in to iCloud... figuring I'll lose a couple of events but not too many).

After I reverted it, as I watched, extra items appeared right back in that Calendar folder. When I went back to open Calendar, the problem was still (or again) there. I reverted again, this time with wi-fi off, and rebooted as well, thinking maybe the wi-fi was interfering. Again, the items I had *not* placed in the Calendar folder appeared out of nowhere, and when I restarted Calendar, it was the same.

I turned the wi-fi on, tried signing in to iCloud and making sure there were no weird settings, signed out again, and rebooted the computer. Still the same—only that brought folders named U.S. Holidays and Birthdays into the calendar (and removed the two blank folders which had been in "On My Mac").

SO

not only are my decade-plus of calendars along with all the things I've done in the last month "gone,"

BUT ALSO

reverting doesn't bring them back. And weird voodoo keeps making folders appear in the Calendar folder (and I think the iCal prefs are doing weird things on their own as well).

What am I missing? If I have a backup, why can't I get back to my proper Calendar folders and events?

I did a similar thing in High Sierra and fixed it. I thought I'd lost all my Calendar events and reminders.

Hopefully this will work the same in El Capitan.

Open your calendar so you can see it and put it to the side (but in view)

Then,open System Preferences>iCloud>

you'll see the window below. If Calendar is NOT checked in the list, you will need to check it and look at your calendar.

You should see everything slowly reappear.

If you uncheck it again, the events, etc will disappear again. Checking the box next to Calendars should solve the issue. Let me know.

you're very welcome- I am happy to help!

I take it you got all of your calendars back like magic!

To answer your questions:

Stay signed into iCloud. You do not want to lose those calendars again, do you?

Yes, you can uncheck Find My Mac.

I would not uncheck the Calendars/Notes/Reminders - in either window. (I do not remember El Capitan!)

If things are working the way you need right now, leave what is checked- CHECKED!!!

Remember, you weren't signed in- and you had the epic calendar fiasco that you thought you'd lost!

I hope this explains it, though, and don't worry, no one is watching from Apple. That's why there is two factor authentication now. If you have any worries at all about staying signed into iCloud, I highly suggest two factor authentication. I love it that extra layer of security!

More about that here: And it works on El Capitan!

So weird, though, because I'm sure I was not normally signed into it before. So it's apparently not keeping a local copy on my computer anymore... the top of the calendar-folders section says "iCloud" now instead of "On My Mac." I wonder if there's any way of getting those folders to be in the "On My Mac" section again like they used to, because obviously then I can sign out.

I guess I'll have to play with this some. Must have been some irritating update that moved them, or something about that message that I was getting, and I answered in a way that moved the local copies to the iCloud, or something.

At any rate, I have them back for now which means there is something for me to play with. Close enough for tonight. Thanks again. 🙂

Oh, wow. Thank you, Cåts!

(Which of course means I did not have to revert to a month ago. Oh, well.)

But I do have follow-up questions.

First, can I sign out of iCloud when finished or do I have to remain signed in forever? (Grrrr I hope not)

Next, when I signed in to get to the screen you show above, the first thing I saw was:

User uploaded file

And the next screen was the one you show. Note that upon signing back in, the two above have reverted themselves to checked (though I had previously unchecked them) and most things on the second screen (screenshot you showed) are checked, as well.

What I'd like to do is uncheck everything it's safe to uncheck, and sign out. I really don't want or need Big Brother Apple watching me.

  • Can I uncheck these two in my screenshot or are they part of what's making this voodoo work?
  • Can I uncheck everything but Calendars in the second screen?
  • (And then sign out?)
  • Or, which parts need to remain checked—besides, obviously, Calendars?

Thank you SO much for your quick help. I was really at a loss without so many years of data, and wondering what good backups that don't... back up... are!

Thank you, Eric. Doing this right now with fingers crossed. Now somehow, signing in to iCloud caused all this in the first place. If I want this never to happen again, do I have to remember never to sign in to iCloud again (never's so long!), or is there something I can avoid doing, should I ever have to sign in, to keep my calendars that are stored on the Mac from flying away to the Cloud?
