All web browsers crash my mac

I am using a late 2013 Mac Pro with 32 Gigs of RAM. I don't like to update the OS of my machines unless I absolutely have to. El Capitan was working perfectly well. Adobe just released CC2019 which requires a minimum of Sierra. When I do an OS update I clone my startup drive and update that drive. At first I tried Mojave. That would freeze frequently when using any Safari, Chrome, or Firefox. I then downgraded to Sierra and am experiencing the same issues. I booted my machine in safe mode and so far haven't had any crashes while writing this issue in Firefox. I have updated all of my browsers, turned off extensions and plugins, and scanned my computer for malware. I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks.

I finally solved my crashing issue. After deleting all of the cache files and disabling browser extensions the crashing reappeared. Then it dawned on me, when my Mac crashed it wasn't actually a crash. The keyboard, mouse and drawing tablet all locked up, but the computer functions kept working. For example, my After Effects renders completed, and Spotify kept playing music even though I had absolutely no keyboard or mouse control. Those functions were completely frozen as if the computer crashed.

Most Mac users will not encounter the problem I was having with my computer locking up. It was due to the old Logitech driver that I was using and its lack of compatibility with the Logitech driver for El Capitan.

First, I started using my Mac mouse instead of my Logitech mouse. The crashes stopped. Then I updated the Logitech mouse driver and started using my Logitech mouse again. It still didn’t crash. Then I updated my home machine Mac OS Mojave and the appropriate Logitech driver for Mojave. It hasn’t crashed since. So far it has run perfectly well for three days. I still have to update Fusion Suitcase, Disk Warrior, and TechTools Pro for Mojave. Other than those apps everything else seems to run just fine.

High Sierra and Mojave have a required Firmware update that appears to be fully backward-compatible. At a minimum we know it provides additional Boot support for APFS SSD drives, and likely security and other enhancements.

¿Have you applied the firmware update?

"Works in Safe mode but not regular mode" generally implicates add-ons. Remove any so-called Virus checkers, cleaners, Application removers, optimizers, speeder-uppers or other overpriced yet useless baggage. MacOS takes care of all these issues internally, and add-ons are not helpful.

If that task is too daunting, you may need a clean Install. Since this requires a Blank disk, this is a great time to think about your backup regimen. What is the date of your most recent backup?

Hi Grant,

Thanks for the response. I am going to stick with Sierra for now. But there were a couple of things that I did that seemed to correct the problem. I deleted all of the cache files from Safari, I turned off all of my extensions and add-ons in all of my browsers, and then I rebooted my machine. Once I performed all of those steps it hasn't crashed. This is a heavy computer use day for me. So far my computer hasn't crashed since this past Saturday. So, hopefully things are working correctly again.

I appreciate your help.
