Print Error with USB connected HP 1300 Laserjet Printer

I have a Mac Mini running 10.4.8 as well as Win2k under Parallel with 2 gigs of memory. When I migrated from my regular Mac mini to the intel duo core from 10.4.7 I am no longer able to print with the following error message generated: hppostprocessing signal error 5

I checked permissions both via terminal

sudo chmod 775 hppostprocessing

and ran disk utility and all permissions are fine. This is not a network connected printer but a USB one. I can see it but it just won't route anything to it. Any thoughts??? TIA

I would open the Printer Setup Utility and run the Reset Printing System option (located under the title menu). Then I would add the printer again. This is not uncommon for a migrated install.

Did that and nothing changed. Re-created the print queue, selected the USB HP1300, selected it as default, and sent a job to it.

No error, finished in a flash...print job shows as completed yet nothing is printed. Any other ideas???? Please???

Did you restart after the printer reset? This can help.

Is the console cups error_log still showing that the hppost... file is still causing the error?

I restarted and though there is no error log on some files like a one page .pdf it just sits there saying "printing" and does nothing on simple .txt files it exits right away with no log or file printed. I'm at a loss... Thanx for any help

The filter "hppostprocessing" is a system provided file, so you need to somehow repair it since it seems that it is still causing the problem. The first thing I would try is downloading and running the 10.4.8 Combo updater. This may repair the file. If not, then you may need to delete it and get the latest driver from HP so that it gets replaced.

I am running 10.4.8... as for HP, they have long since stopped supporting Mac. I can't find a driver for the 1300... if you have any ideas where to look I would appreciate it! Thanx

OK, downloaded a new driver and it works. So does that mean that the .4.7 to .4.8 upgrade may have messed this up? Thanx for the help Paul!

There is a chance that the upgrade to .7 to .8 was the culprit. There is always a number of printer issues after any system update but they are often fixed with a repair permissions. If that doesn't work then the Combo update can be the solution as there is often things that get missed with the standard update. So even though you already had 4.8, the Combo update for the same version may have resolved the problem with the hp file. Anyway, good to hear you got it working.

Actually it seems HP had put up a more recent upgrade to its driver becuase when I looked at the two versions, the new and the one I had it was a minor but different version.

Thank you again for your help! Now I'll try and see if I can get the PSC750 to work 8-)
