Photos not in chronological order

I have a MacBook running Sierra 10.12.6 and Photos Version 2 installed. All software is up to date. I understand the Photos album at the top of left sidebar is supposed to organize pictures in chronological order, but I have found several out of order. My pictures are taken with an iPhone 8 and a Sony Cybershot digital camera. Any reason why? Ca it be fixed?

You have checked, if the date in your Sony camera is set correctly, right?

Have the photos been taken while you have been traveling and in a different timezone from your home time zone? Then you ay need to adjust the dates after importing, because Photos may not have assigned the correct timezone to the photos when importing them.

  • If photos are tagged with GPS, Photos will use the timezone indicated by the GPS tags, and this may be wrong, if the camera has been set to a different timezone.
  • If no PS has been available, because you have been inside a building, Photos will use the timezone of the Macs system time, when you import the photos.

You can check the timezone for the photos that are sorted incorrectly, if you select a photo and use the command "Adjust Date&Time". The bottom of this panel is showing the "Closest city", used for the timezone. Use "Adjust Date&Time" to set the closest city to the TimeZone that the camera clock has been set to when you took the photos. But when you change the timezone, Photos will change the time as well. Set "Adjusted Time" back to the "Original Time" after changing the time zone and closest city.
