iTunes on iMac not recognizing iPhone, despite trying recommended steps

I cannot get iTunes on my iMac (10.13.6) to recognize my iPhone. It is a 6s (so old I guess), but I tried connecting it to my laptop and it works there, so I am figuring this is an issue with my iMac.

I've restarted both the computers and iPhone, tried multiple charging cords (the phone DOES charge when plugged into the iMac), tried multiple USB ports and I still have nothing. Everything appears up-to-date as well, on both the phone and computer ends.

Download the current 12.8 installer for iTunes from https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.

Unlock your iOS device and connect it to USB.

Reinstall iTunes from the .dmg that you've downloaded.

During the installation it should announce that a further software update is required.

Install that and iTunes should see your device.

I have the same problem. Have you solved this ? I deleted all content on iphone 6 and 7 plus yesterday and connected to itunes no problem. Restored the 7 plus and then the 6. It put an old back up on the iphone6. Today it wont connect! Changed leads/bought a new lead. Have updated to High Sierra, deleted antivirus stuff, deleted the phone again, reset privacy and all settings. Changed leads. Hard reset the phone, restarted the Mac loads of times. Reset the Mac lockdown folder. Finally got a message saying trust this computer then nothing ! All day Ive been on it ! WTH is wrong with it ?
