How do I avoid winmail.dat

I need your help in order to avoid (not workaround) winmail.dat attachments.

I've send an html e-mail from my work via MS-Outlook along with attachments.

My gmail had no problem to receive the attached files as they are.

Other people's MS-Outlook and gmails had no problem also.

I only have problem with my mail in my mac at home (os high sierra).

I do not want to use/pay other app/tool to "see" my attachements.

I need to avoid winmai.dat and receive (and edit) the attached files ( whatever type).

Or I just need a confirmation that i should forget mac mail and install MS Outlook at home.

Thank you all in advance for your kind contribution.

null-OTHER, macOS High Sierra (10.13.6), mail available with macos
