How update Java 11?

With Java 11, Oracle has removed the Java System Preferences panel.

How does one readily check whether Java needs updating and easily do the update now, without that Preferences panel?

I do realize that I can check the current version from Terminal via command "java --version". But without having to browse to Oracle's Java site, is there some easy way to see if that version is indeed the current version?

Hello murrayE,
Thanks for the information and the screenshot. After more research and trying to test Java, I was able to come across this information from Oracle: Java and Apple Safari Browser - Oracle

This article applies to:

  • Platform(s): macOS
  • Browser(s) Safari

Safari 12 and above no longer supports NPAPI (technology required for Java applets)

The Java Plugin for web browsers relies on the cross-platform plugin architecture NPAPI, which had been supported by all major web browsers for over a decade. Apple's Safari version 12 and above have dropped support for NPAPI, and therefore Java Plugin do not work on these browsers anymore.

Java applications are offered through web browsers as either a web start application (which do not interact with the browser once they are launched) or as a Java applet (which might interact with the browser). This change does not affect Web Start applications, it only impacts applets.

Developers and System administrators looking for alternative ways to support users of Safari should see this blog regarding Launching Web Start applications.

Thanks and have a wonderful day.

What's worse, while Oracle is saying to use Java Web Start instead of applets, Java Web Start has apparently been removed from Java SE 11.

I see my system has a `javaws` executable in `/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/Current/Commands/javaws`, but if I try to execute it, I get a pop-up window saying `

No Java runtime present, requesting install.

Unable to locate a Java Runtime to invoke.`.

However, if I click the link there, I'm directed ao a page to download Java 8. I don't think that will work, given that I have Java 11 JDK installed (and Oracle support for updates to Java 8 will be ending soon). What a horrible mess!

Hello murrayE,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities and asking about Java. The preferred option to get Java is to get it from Oracle directly.

This article talks about this: Get Java for your Mac - Apple Support

Download Java for OS X directly from Oracle.

Get the latest version

If an app or webpage you want to use asks you to install Java software, you can download the current version of Java for OS X directly from Oracle's website.

Note: You can also download legacy Java SE 6 from Apple if you’re using an app that specifically requires this unsupported, out-of-date version.

Also, in System Preferences, the last row, there is still an icon for Java. When you click this, it opens in a separate window, but is still functional in macOS Mojave 10.14. This is also shown in the help guid from Oracle: How do I update Java for my Mac? - Oracle

When I open this, the tab that opens in Update, and the option to check for updates automatically are available. Thanks and have a wonderful day.
