When I drag a 900KB JPEG photo from my desktop to iMovie a thumbnail clip appears on the timeline. However, when I play the clip no video appears. What's the problem?
iMac with Retina 5K display, macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)
Could be a corrupt preference. Try opening iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and selecting to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Now see if your photo will play.
