Notes app crashes on opening

Hi,

Notes app does not open anymore. From the dock, from the app folder or even with continuity, nothing opens and it crashes immediately. I tried to reboot, reboot without extension (shift reboot), no change. I went to S.O.S. with Disk Utility, no change. I trashed most preference files, no change. I installed Mojave 14.1, no change.

Does anyone have the same problem ? Did someone find a solution ?

This started yesterday (10/31), just before 14.1 got available. I don't recall doing anything special in my system files in the last week...

Thanks for any help.

Hello, Bernard Marcheterre!

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities, it's great to have you here. In reading your post, I see that you're not able to open the Notes app on your Mac. I would be happy to see if I can help resolve this.

First off, you've done some really great troubleshooting so kudos on that. One thing I think might be good to try is testing this issue in a new administrator account. This won't necessarily resolve the issue but it will determine if the issue is occurring in just your user account of your entire system is affected. You can find the steps to test this in an article titled How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac . The steps you'll follow are here:

Use another account for testing

If another user account is already set up on your Mac, you can simply log out of your account (Apple menu > Log Out) and log in with the other account. But the best way to test is with a newly created account:

  1. Choose Apple menu () > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
  2. Click User uploaded file, then enter an administrator name and password.
  3. Click the Add button (+) below the list of users.
  4. Complete the fields shown for a Standard or Administrator account, then click Create Account (or OK).

If you plan to test with any of the documents in your own account, make those documents available to the new account. Drag them to the Shared folder of the Users folder on your hard drive (~/Users/Shared). You can then move them to other folders after you log in as the new user.

Then log out of your account and log in with the new account:

  1. Choose Apple menu > Log out.
  2. At the login window, log in with the name and password of the new account. If you're also asked to sign in with an iCloud account or Apple ID, skip that step.

Now try to reproduce the issue in the new account. If you need to set up an email account or other account in order to test, you can do so.

Cheers!

Hey, Bernard Marcheterre,

Since it's not happening in both accounts, we can start to rule out a system-wide issue. With that being the case, I'd recommend that you sign out of any accounts that are signed into for Notes (including iCloud), reboot your Mac and test it one more time (before signing back in). If the app loads up, go ahead and sign back in to your various accounts and see if it is able to stay open. Be sure to back up any data that you need before signing out.

If the issue does continue to occur after signing out, I'd recommend contact Apple for support and service to work on this further.

I hope you find this helpful.

Best regards.

Yes, I could contact Apple and I will because this bug is annoying : I use notes on all my devices and I like that they synchronize. But, before I do so, here is a paragraph taken from the Console report on the crash :

Application Specific Information:

dyld3 mode

*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '*** -[__NSPlaceholderDictionary initWithObjects:forKeys:count:]: attempt to insert nil object from objects[1]'

terminating with uncaught exception of type NSException

abort() called

Maybe someone can decipher a solution in that...
