Can't Log in to Public WiFi with Mac

I have never had trouble connecting to public networks with my MacBook Pro until a few days ago. I select a network and the Join "network name" login dialog appears but instead of presenting the network authentication page, it is empty and a sheet appears with the error message: The Webpage couldn't be loaded. I have tried many times on several public networks since this behavior began and it never works. I have to open up a browser to connect so I think that the hardware is OK.

What is causing this behavior? How do I fix the problem?

(My software is up to date. I already deleted the WiFi files that determine the preferences in the Network pane in system preferences but it didn't help.)

Thanks!

I'm sorry I gave the impression that I had any difficulty because I did not. I followed a different process whenever I ran across your issue and that process worked without difficulty. It was just a different process.

By 'remove,' I hope you don't mean un-install. First, I really need the personal VPN. Second, uninstalling it and re-installing it after the test is a bit of work. I can disable it, though. I did but the network still recognizes me and didn't require a new log in so I can test if this change helps.

So I will take your suggestion and give it a try when it asks me to log in again. Thanks!
