How do I stop the split screen on my iMessages on my ipad

How can I change to full screen mode in iMessages on my iPad, in both landscape and portrait mode?

I want to view / compose iMessages in full screen.

iPad Air Wi-Fi + Cellular, iOS 12.1

Yes thank you for that link. I have done so.

maybe others will see the usefulness in my suggestion and implement it.

Strangly, the iPhone works “correctly” in all cases. and Mail works “correctly” in portrait mode, but someone forgot to implement this feature in portrait mode of Mail and both orientations of Messages...

The left-hand “Conversations” pane is persistent in the Messages App, in both Landscape and Portrait screen modes. The iOS Messages App does not provide any facility to hide the Conversations list or otherwise configure the screen layout.

Correct. Except technically what you said is the case for the iPad implementation of the iOS app. It actually works properly in the iPhone implementation of the iOS app 😉.
