Updated to Mojave — External Home Folder Not Associated with User Account

Upgraded to Mojave yesterday, and upon completion, my home folder (which was located on an external drive /Volumes/Home/) was no longer assigned to my User account. Needless to say, this caused the "macOS needs to update your Library" repair dialog countless time.

I attempted to remedy the permission situation using this article:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203538

That remedy fixed the endless deluge of dialog boxes, but still did not fix my "missing" Home folder (technically, it's not missing, it's still on the external hard drive.)

My attempt to change the Home directory to my external Home folder using "Advanced Options" within the User & Groups in System Preferences fails. Instead, the system creates a dummy Volume with a delimited name (i.e. Home 1, Home 2, Home 3) that only contains the following items: User folder, .account file, and Library. This means I don't have my original blessed Desktop, Documents, etc folders (they're still there on the external drive, just waiting to be blessed).

Fortunately, I have a backup Admin account, so when I'm unable to login under my primary account I can fix it from the second account.

Any ideas how to re-establish my Home folder?

iMac, macOS Mojave (10.14)
