Car Play cuts off car radio

I have an iPhone 8 Plus that has is running the newest iOS: 12.1

When I have it plugged into Car Play in my 2018 Volkswagen Atlas it will cut off the car audio completely. This happened with my iPhone 7 Plus as well.

What's really strange is that my current iPhone 8 belonged to my husband and his NEVER cut off the radio.
My VW has the most current software update, as well.

It doesn't matter if i'm using navigation or not, the car audio will shut off randomly.

I would try force closing all of your apps and then restart the iPhone. It sounds like there is something in the background that CarPlay thinks you are listening to and takes over.
