Trying to raise or lower the volume by grabbing a dot on the volume line is virtually impossible. I want, say, 2.7. Instead, even while holding down the shift key, it jumps past 2.7 to 2.9. When I finally get it CLOSE to 2.7 (maybe 2.8), when I let go of the Shift or of the mouse, the dot JUMPS to some way high or way low volume. IS THERE A WAY TO MANUALLY SELECT A NUMBER FOR THE VOLUME?

you weren't very specific about which controls you were using, and we may have been talking about two different things!
did you mean the volume fader rather than the automation curves? if so, just double-click on the fader knob to enter a value from the keyboard.
the controlKey method is for adjusting automation points, like in the animation above.

hold down the ControlKey instead of the ShiftKey to make very fine adjustments to the automation points:
Does not work. It jumps, for instance from 4.3 to 4.9. I want to be able to type in a number. Surely there is a way???
