how to create symbolic link in Mojave to move iOS backup?

Hello,

I am doing a clean install of my iMac to Mojave 10.14.1.

I don't pay for iCloud and I have lots of iOS devices that I backup to my computer. it is just not reasonable to back them all up to my local small 500GB SSD since I have at least five 256GB iOS devices. So I need to back them up to an external drive...

What is the easiest way to move my iOS backups to an external drive in an automated way and still backup via iTunes?

I used to have a symbolic link to my external HDD. However it looks like creating symbolic links is no longer allowed with system integrity protection. Is there any guide to moving your iOS backup folder to an external drive under Mojave?

Thanks!

iMac with Retina 5K display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

Thanks to VikingOSX for setting us on the right path.

To sum it all up, all you have to do extra now is

*** Give Terminal Full Disk Access ***

You do this in System Preferences->Security & Privacy->Full Disk Access.

Click the padlock, authenticate, then click + and add Terminal to the list (Terminal lives in the Utilities folder inside your Application folder).

Once you do this, you can create symlinks again!

Well, I went ahead and tried and you are right. Creating symbolic links inside ~/Library seems to be forbidden now.

I did not pursue this, but I suppose you may still be able to do it in three steps

(again, I did NOT test).

1) temporarily disable SIP

2) create the symlink

3) reenable SIP

Steps 1) and 3) need to be done when booted from the Recovery partition.

Just in case you can’t get your method to work, here is a different idea to consider:

The Sandisk line has several solutions; I have the Sandisk Connect. It will work wirelessly with my iDevices using the free app and then you can simply plug it into your Mac if desired and it will work like a regular USB stick.

Looking at their site, they now have an iXPAND stick which may work for you.

That was not my experience. The procedure at the following link does not work

And googling around there are some discussions about SIP disabling symbolic links in your home folder.

If you can come back with some instructions that are known to work under Mojave then I would be very grateful.
