I'm not seeing a page of my favourite sites when I open a new Safari browser

Up until a few days ago, whenever I opened an extra Safari browser, there used to be an array of icons representing all of my favourite sites. All I see now are references to Apple products, like this:

Previously, I got an array of icons that reflected my line up of favourite sites:

This is happening and I haven't even updated to Mojave yet.

How do I correct this situation, on the assumption that I can? I find it annoying because it's not down to anything I've done.

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.6), 8Gb RAM Mackintosh HD. 1Tb.

If you don't see Show Favorites, choose Safari > Preferences, click General, then click the “New windows open with” pop-up menu and choose Favorites. You can also see the Favorites page when you open new tabs.

Also from Safari menu > View choose Show Favorites Bar.

Tried all up to "Also from Safari menu > View choose Show Favorites Bar." This is what comes up in my View dropdown:

I've also noticed that a opening a new widow gives me a new window with a blank browser bar:

Previously, it used to default to the Google page. I've now restored the situation to open with the Google homepage, and it works.
