If you are storing contacts in more than one place, such as multiple email accounts as you have listed here, you need to go to Contacts, then in the upper left corner, make sure that you are looking at all of your Contact Groups. Also, when you go to Settings>Contacts, you can choose which account is going to be the default account that new contacts are saved in. If it were me, I would ensure that I have contacts all in a single account and make sure that you are backing them up on a regular basis. If you are using email accounts to handle your contacts, you can also turn them off/on in Settings, and you may wish to use a browser to log into the web access of your email account and verify what contacts are where.

If you synchronize with iTunes, then you should have a backup made before the contacts were lost. What were you doing when these contacts were lost? Are you using iCloud for your contacts? If you are, then turn off iCloud for Contacts and then turn it back on again. You can log into iCloud with a browser on a computer and see if your contacts are in iCloud. Not knowing what you were doing when the contacts were lost makes it more difficult to troubleshoot.

I'm starting to have some difficulty understanding you here. You need to have logged into iCloud with a browser on the computer. then click on Contacts and see what is there. If they are in your email accounts, then you need to use the computer and browser and log into the web access for the email account. It just seems to me that you are using multiple accounts to handle your contacts, and that is what is creating confusion as to where your contacts are located, how they are getting saved/backed up, and how they are getting synced. I cannot be sure where all of your content is, you are going to have to figure that out and then try merging them into one account.

I am not sure what you mean in the next post, "And what advice I took after that in keeping names".
