Why has 10.14.1 not updated automatically?
iMac with Retina 5K display, macOS Mojave (10.14)
Did you participate in the Developer or Public Mojave Beta? If so, that may be why. There have been discussions on the forum about problems getting the .1 update and any machine I had that had been in the Dev beta did not update automatically. I had to go to the app store and 'Get' Mojave in order to for software update to suddenly see the 10.14.1 update was out there.
My non-Mojave beta machines updated as expected.

I also have been using Dev updates and all mine have updated automatically when posted. I did not receive the update to 10.14.1 automatically. It continued to show beta 5 was current. I forced the updated to 10.14.1 by going to the App store, which launched Software Update, when then saw 14.1. The update to 14.2 showed automatically as soon as it was posted.
If you search the forums, you will notice others who were running the public beta have also had issues getting 14.1 final. Not sure why that is. All I can say is when I went to the App Store and told it Get Mojave, it launched the system Software Update and it did see the .1 update.
Is your iMac using an SSD, only Macs with SSD and APFS file system can get the updates via System Preferences> Software Update. If your iMac is using the HFS+ file system you can download the update from here,
https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1981?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Once downloaded double-click to install.
FWIW, I have/had the dev betas since June and have never had an issue updating. However, the updates do not automatically download and install. You do have to open System Preferences > Software Update and wait for any new update to show. Sometimes for quite some time.
Update:
Throwing my usual caution to the wind, I clicked on the link provided and downloaded the installer package.
Here's an image showing what resulted:-
Somewhat perplexed, I wondered if this had occurred because I was logged on as a 'Standard User'. So, I logged out and then logged in again as an Admin. user. As I apparently had no access to the already downloaded file, I downloaded it again from the link provided by Eau Rouge. Once again I tried to install from the installation package but the end result was exactly the same - as shown above. ๐
I then tried at least six time to start my iMac in safe mode but failed to achieve that aim each time .๐ ๐
Having previously set up another 'Test' user with Admin privileges on this machine, I logged on again as 'Test' and immediately went to the App Store and searched for Mojave. Having located same, I clicked in the 'Get' button to download yet again. This time I was able to successfully install 10.14.1.
Everything now appears to be working normally! ๐

Yes, I did install the Mojave Beta at the outset.
Thank you for your suggestion. ๐
I note that you apparently have 10.14.2 now. Should I have access to that too?
Interesting. I've been running Mojave betas on three different Macs and none of the point build updates ever automatically downloaded and installed. I had to click the update button in the Software Update panel.
Well to find out if your Mojave install is APFS or HFS+ just do a Command-i on your Macintosh HD icon on your Desktop. In the General panel it will be under Format.
I'm not sure about fusion drives, if they are supposed to automatically convert to APFS when installing Mojave, I think that was going to be Apples intention but I think they have been plagued by problems.
Hi
Thanks for your response. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to know that and am now wondering if I have overlooked something which Apple may have previously notified me about. Can you provide a reference for me?
I have checked and I actually have a 2TB Fusion Drive in my machine.
I will follow your link and see what happens!
It took me a short while to understand what you'd meant - but then 'the penny dropped' and I found this:-
I am still no wiser, though, as to why the 'Automatic Update' didn't function. ๐
I am interested to note that at the top of the image it shows the 'creation date' as being 15 July 2017. I purchased this computer - brand new - in early January THIS year but I'll not concern myself about this particular anomaly! ๐
Some good thoughts, Eau Rouge!
I use WiFi but have never found that a problem. System Preferences has not indicated that an update is available. As other folk are now mentioning, it may be because I used the Public Mojave Beta.
Visitors now, so will have to get back to this later. Thanks. ๐
A further Update!
I have had a further long discussion with Apple Support because I am still unable to start this machine in Safe Boot mode. No matter what I attempted, with their guidance, I was unable to solve the conundrum. I was told that Apple engineers have now been advised of the situation and that I should hear from Apple support again within 'a few days'.
In the meantime, I contacted a long-standing friend who also has an iMac. I determined that he is also now running macOS Mojave so asked him if he would attempt to start his machine in Safe Boot mode - albeit that I had to explain to him how to do it! ๐ He agreed and I left him to it.
He called me on FaceTime from his iPhone some 10 minutes or so later, worried that his computer had still not started. He showed me his iMac screen and I could see the Apple logo and the 'progress bar'. As we spoke, his machine started as expected and with Safe Boot showing in the top right-hand corner of his screen. There was an audible "phew" from my friend. He then restarted his machine and it started normally - indeed, I heard it 'chime'!
Then it hit me that this iMac does NOT chime; oh no! not another fault?!!! ๐๐ฎ๐ข
I investigated and found this:- https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202768
Mac models from early 2016 and earlier make a chime sound when they start up. Mac models from late 2016 and newer don't have a startup chime, with the exception of MacBook Air (13-inch, 2017)
There is always a reason for everything! ๐
Cheers!
Yep Mojave transition a bit odd for me to...
Both iMac are APFS format SSD's retrofitted Samsung EVO Pros.
Clean install from bootable installer.
No Beta participation.
No notifications regarding point build updates.
I get plenty of App update notifications for 3rd party apps via App Store route as per.
Had to 'manually' search and download.
U.S. support page bookmarked for years for just such occasion.
Solid hardwired 260 Mbs internet.
14.2 update finnaly appeared this morning in Systems Prefs. after a wait. 'detailed info ..please visit' url not active, not selectable?
Back to the old days of manual input search.
All minor stuff I know, but I do like to fully understand what I am getting and make up my own mind.
Again some minor irritations still there...contextual Services menu items showing but not functional.
early days I guess.
Ah! ๐
As I'm not a 'Developer', I suppose I must await the general release of 10.14.2
Can you throw any light on my query here?
The creation date is probably when it was first fired up at the factory.
Ok so it is APFS thats good to know, how do you connect to the internet, if using WiFi it may be the reason that the connection is no t sufficient to receive such a large update, try connecting to your router using a cable.
Does System Preferences indicate that there is an update available for download?
Try restarting the Mac to see if that jolts it into action.
If that doesn't work then we may have a corrupt system preferences preferences file.
Why has 10.14.1 not updated automatically?
