CHANGING NAMES OF SONGS AND ARTISTS ON MY MUSIC LIBRARY ON PC

i have over 9500 songs on my library including about 100 downloaded from CD's where the ARTIST is shown as VARIOUS ARTISTS and under NAME it shows (for instance) MATCHBOX / WHEN YOU ASK ABOUT LOVE.

i have edited all of these into their correct positions in my library and they remain in that position until i play them, when they immediately switch back to the original listing in the library, despite me saving them when entered with the correct information.

i have followed the ITunes User Guide/ Manage ITunes / add and edit info about items in your library / change name of song, artist or album, but the items still revert to their original status in the library as i found before.

Normally i spot VARIOUS ARTISTS on the CD list as it appears on my screen before downloading and i can change the information then and it downloads correctly. Unfortunately these items have managed to get on to my library hence the problem i am having.

my library is held on my HP Pavilion PC and copied to my IPod 64 gb

please advise me what i should do to save the information in my library as i want it.

many thanks dave

See Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows for possible reasons why edits might not stick.

If you want to make systematic edits you might potentially find some of my Scripts for iTunes for Windows useful.

I'm with tt2 on this - whenever I have this type of issue it's usually the specific mp3 file(s) that are set readonly or similar.

Try a right click on an offending track in itunes and select "Show in Windows Explorer". If you've got "Let iTunes manage files" set on, then both the filename itself and it's properties will give a hint of what's going on. (Right click - show properties). If it's readonly, then set to readwrite and apply. You can also change the Title/Artist etc field in the File Details tab - and see if "sticks" and changes itunes when you exit back to itunes and play the file again - it should do.

I have hundreds of tracks with a / in the name, no problem. The filename replaces it with an underscore, but the Title property still retains the /.

thanks for your prompt reply turingtest2. i have gone through your suggestion and can confirm the relevant permissions were already allowed so it has not resolved my problem.

however i note that ALL of the names of these problem tracks show, for instance, Matchbox (which is the artist) / when you ask about love (which is the name). i therefore think that the slash is causing the problem and not allowing me to save the changes but flipping back to the original settings as soon as i click play.

i have tried to switch names and artists on a couple of other tracks (without the / in the listing) and they are saved and do not switch back.

so the slash / is locking the tracks and stopping the information being switched from its original downloading from CD. i have even deleted the / then saved before applying the changes and that still sends the track back into its original position in the library

unless you can come up with a solution i feel i will have to just leave these items (annoyingly) as they are

i am sure ITunes users must have had the same problems before and maybe they can advise me how to solve it.

I will try and get my son, who is a wizz on the PC to get this screenshot into your box. i have given up in total frustration now being 71 years old !

if usuccessful, you may get a reply in the next few days otherwise i will just give up. i am sure that the / is causing the problem as these tracks have come from various cd's and i can correct and save changes on all other tracks except these with the / showing.

Did you apply permissions changes in the manner described? Seeing that they are apparently correct in the top level folder tells you nothing about the individual items in folders nested several layers deep. If you actively checked on a specific file that you cannot edit and confirmed that its permissions were OK and the files are in MP3 format then I'd lean towards the multiple tags issue. Simply having a / character in a name field doesn't prevent it from being edited. Perhaps you could show a screenshot of the details of a few tracks just so I have a clearer picture of what you're unable to change.
