why my itunes wont coonect to my iphone

i updated my MacBook to the macOS mojave and since then when i plug my iPhone in my iTunes will not connect with it so that i can back it up. is there something i have to set up or reinstall to have iTunes read my iPhone?

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2012), macOS Mojave (10.14.1)

I cant connect my iPhone to iTunes on my laptop I used to be able to just plug in the USB connected to my phone and it started up iTunes and automatically did a sync. Now it doesnt seem to recognise it.. I did change my phone from iPhone 8 to iPhone XS but I set up the Xs by iphone 8 back up. and it all worked great
