Scam or Genuine

I received an e-mail from Apple ID that said my account was temporarily locked out because my Apple ID was signed in with a new device in China and I had to login to my account and provide some details. If these details were not provided within 24hrs my account would be permanently locked out. My question is, am I being scammed to provide my log in details or is this a normal process for Apple ID?
