Terrible Generic Movie Poster Art?

I've started to noticed that some movies have some really terrible and generic movie poster art. Here's the Lord of the Rings Trilogy with The Fellowship as an example of this while the other two movies have their normal poster art:

Now, I understand that the movie is still the same movie we know and love, but some of these are downright awful and look completely out of place, especially if it's in a trilogy like the Lord of the Rings example.

Maybe they didn't have the rights to the original poster art? Just an odd choice to make.
