iPad Pro 11" Apps Not Using Full Screen

Just got my new iPad Pro 11" and started playing with it. Thing is, some apps (so far I've noticed Facebook and Netflix) do not use the full screen. I am sure that one answer is that the app authors need to update their apps to handle the new dimensions.

My question here is, though, is there some setting on the iPad that will essentially stretch the app (like the iPhone 1x/2x thing) to get them to fit?

It's more of a bummer on Netflix--it won't even use the full screen in full screen.

Not really a good analogy.

iOS is not a web design app.

iOS works and looks differently a large variety of different sized and shaped iDevice screens.

We now have five iPad screen shape/sizes.

And, at least 6-8 screen shape sizes between iPhone and some iPod Touch models.

It is NOT just a simple issue of stretching an app and/or UI elements to a larger screen (something that Google Android apps do horribly, to the detriment of the app and its users ), but app developers maybe having to optimally reposition/readjust some UI elements so everything looks and works correctly on every single iDevice screen that is still being supported.

This is made a little more difficult with iPads, now, wth a screen area with rounded corners.

Some UI elements are going to have to be re-adjusted/repostioned in those corner areas, now.

Yes.

As I have already stated, since there is increase in iPad screen size on this new 11" iPad Pro, it looks like ALL or most app developers will be playing “catch-up” to fix this full screen app issue.

This may take app developers some time to fix and adjust.

Especially so, with these new iPads having visually rounded screen corners, now.

You just need to just sit back and wait for these screen/UI changes to happen.

I was on chat with Apple Support for about 40 minutes today and didn’t really get anywhere... I have this same issue with many third party apps - Chrome, all Google apps, Spotify, Noizio, Notability, Netflix. In some cases, the app is only using 70-80% of the screen with black borders around the app... also, the clock, date and wifi, battery icons move closer to the centre of the screen.

Looks like resolution is not correct in these apps.

One App that does work full-screen is Spark Mail.

Be good to use the full space available. I assume this issue is third party developers needing to update the app software settings?

Have to agree to disagree. I'm a dev, and the same conceptual principles of responsive design apply regardless of if it is native or Web UI. It's just that Web has had to accept and deal with this many-screen-sizes problem for longer. It requires extra thought, design, and dev work. But it ends up being a lot more scalable, from an effort point of view, than trying to design for every specific possible device dimensions.

It's even more applicable and important since they added the ability to do split screen for apps.

I was just hoping that Apple would provide an option similar to what they do with iPhone apps. Oh well.

Yeah, it seems that may be the only solution--time/wait on app devs to update.

I suspect this is lazy app dev--many devs design/develop for pixel-specific device layouts rather than designing responsively. YouTube/YouTube TV are good examples of apps that work already, presumably because they are designed responsively. This is a very basic principle of Web design, but it seems that native app devs are still coming to terms with it. :-/
