Reader experience when author makes update to a previously submitted book?

Are the reader's version of highlights, bookmarks and notes lost if they update to the latest version of a book after the author edits and updates to new version number for a previously submitted book?

Does apple ibooks divulge whether a book is abridged? Two versions of the same book, by different publishers. One has 766 pages, and the other, despite apparently having more type on each page, only has 449 pages. Is the latter an abridged version? It does not state that anywhere on the purchase web-page.
