While installing Xcode 10.1 on MacBook Air, MacOS Mojave 10.14.1, I am getting the following error: "We could not complete your purchase. There is not enough disk space available to install the product." I have 87.5 GB free space on the system.

I have the same bug.
Try manual workaround.
#1 go to https://developer.apple.com/download/more/
#2 search for Xcode and manually download and install it.
#3 direct link as for 10.1 version on 6 dec 2018 is: https://download.developer.apple.com/Developer_Tools/Xcode_10.1/Xcode_10.1.xip

This still seems to still be an issue in mid-January 2019. I've gone full nuclear and freed up 136gb and still couldn't reinstall Xcode. The "/more" part of the previous user's mentioned URL is the most important, since the regular download page on developer.apple.com only links to the App Store.
