iPhone Xs Camera Focus Malfunction

From time to time my new iPhone Xs camera won't focus. Instead, the focus swings back in forth in both extremes over and over and won't take the photo even if I press the shutter "button". The Portrait mode works fine; it affects only Photo and Square. There's no repeatable lighting or other condition to explain it - most of the time the camera works perfectly. The problem is intermittent, so I'm hesitant to take it in for repair if I can’t demonstrate the malfunction. It's a brand new phone! Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I had this issue on my launch day XS. Contacted support via AppleCare and had a new handset shipped out. Same issue once again.

The issue will also flip to front camera if you switch cameras. Only resolves with a quick reset of phone via power on/off.

Annoying, I assure it’s a software bug as it’s on rear and front camera, but you’d think it’d be wide spread across net reports.

I’ve restored to previous backup, fresh iOS via Mac and setup as new phone and still, the same annoying issue.

Apple are addiment my original phone was the first report, I’m not so convinced.
