quicktime pro and Mojave

I frequently used Quicktime Pro 7 to do quick edits to video clips - it worked up through High Sierra.

I recently migrated to another laptop running Mojave.

QuickTime Pro 7 opens, but all the Pro features are greyed out.

"No problem, I have my registration key".

Um. Problem.

The QuickTime registration server (http://quicktimepro.apple.com/) is no longer answering at Apple. The registration won't go through.

What do I do now? Anybody know where the registration authorization file is written? I still have access to my old laptop if it can be found and simply copied over.

You don’t have to go to any website to register QuickTime Pro again, if you have the key in an email message.

Open the QuickTime Player 7 application. Open the registration dialog from the menu. Enter the name, optional organization and code exactly as provided. Use the tab key after the last entry. ‘Pro’ should now be activated, and the ‘Buy’ button should disappear.

The website that no longer exists, was for new registrations. As Pro licenses are no longer sold, the website has been offline for years.

I revisited the registration dialogue, and successfully entered my key.

It's not obvious, however. Once you enter the key, the natural thing is to hit the blue button... which attempts to contact the QuickTime registration server.

Simply clicking off into another field (e.g., "company") makes the dialogue "take" the key, and activates the pro features. Not exactly intuitive, but the result is the same - I have my QT Pro features back.

Thanks for putting this up … I really don't want to have to work without Quicktime 7 Pro … it*s such a handy tool for quick and easy everyday tasks around video. The whole concept of having a folder for the (pro) codecs and manual control over key aspects of encoding is awesome. The newer player is rather useless and I don't want to open After Effects or Premiere for every tiny edit like replacing an audio layer.

Looks like Mojave will be my last Update for a while then …

It's /Library/Preferences/com.apple.QuickTime.plist; if the key was applied from a non-administrator account, it's in the corresponding location of the home folder.

Mojave will be the last Mac OS that supports 32 bit apps like QuickTime Player 7.
