Make Gmail the default mailto: link in Safari

Previously, the method described here (https://ithelp.brown.edu/kb/articles/open-email-links-with-gmail-in-safari) worked well to allow email links to be opened with Gmail in Safari. In Safari 12.0, this type of extension no longer works. Instead, a paid app (Open With - Browser, Mail Client, Gmail picker on the Mac App Store) exists in the Mac Store but it seems crazy to have to spend $5 to get this functionality.

Any suggestions?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch,Early 2015), macOS Mojave (10.14.1), Safari 12.0.1

I just shipped Open In Webmail on the Mac App Store. It handles opening mailto: links in Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, Fastmail, Zoho, or AOL. It's not free but it's only $1 — seemed fair for the time it took to package this up nicely. Hope it's useful to some of you!

I want gmail, in Safari, to open when I click on a mail link. Mailto worked perfectly till it was banned in Mojave. The recommended app to do so in the app store has bad reviews: lots of crashes reported. We need either a replacement for Mailto or an easy way to set it as do all other browsers. This is a deal breaker that can send me out of Safari back to Chrome. If I don't get a solution, then Bye Apple. Hello Google.
