HD Full (seems almost fully used by System or iCloud)

I'm getting a notification that the 500GB HD of my macbook pro only has 11GB free space.

(system running macOS Mojave version 10.14.1)

All recommendations have been activated (sinds the start of using this macbook)

Storage indicates

So it seems all HD space is being 'consumed' by iCloud.

when trying to Manage the disk, "system" seems to consume all storage capacity (410GB)

After some time the overview changes, showing the total iCloud Drive usage but "System" seems to be loading (even after more than one hour no indication of the system storage consumption is indicated.

Unfortunately I have not been able to find a solution to solve my problem. :-(

How can i solve this problem?

Problem solved 🙂

Logged out of iCloud on my macbook pro without keeping copies of iCloud files (this apparently automatically clears the data stored in the local Library) Then logged into iCloud again with a "clean" SSD and no more critical disk messages.

Thanks Kappy and Bob for the useful info and comments that led me to find the solution. 🙂

Get Correct Storage Information

Do not use the information from the Storage section of the About This Mac dialog. Ignore the Storage information as it is typically wrong. To find out the correct information for any disk: Select a Desktop disk icon. Press Command-I to open the Get Info window and look at the topmost panel displayed. You will find the disk information displayed for Capacity, Available, and Used. If you have more than one disk/partition then repeat for each one on your Desktop.

The categories found in the Storage section of About This Mac is simply an arbitrary way of displaying files on your drive. There are no such categories actually on the drive.

How to Free Up Space on The Hard Drive

  1. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
  2. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
  3. Also, see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
  4. What is 'Other' and 'Purgeable' in About This Mac?
  5. Files That Make Up the 'Other' Storage Category, and How to Remove Them
  6. Free up storage space on your Mac.
  7. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
  8. Be sure to Empty the Trash to recover the space.
  9. Replace the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
  10. Use OmniDiskSweeper or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

You should allow at least 20GBs or 10-15% of the disk's capacity as free space. If you run out of space then the only recovery is to erase the disk and lose everything that is on the disk. For safety always have backups.

Thanks again for the help

I installed OmniDiskSweeper and sized the full HD. (SSD 500GB)

Largest part of the disk is occupied by files residing in my library and also are stored on iCloud, the largest part are all the pictures and movies from some holidays that i copied to my local NAS. Seems that all copied files are now physically stored on my SSD 500GB drive in 'Users>'me'>Library>...', in iCloud storage and on my NAS.

Completed a small "test" by deleting one of the maps in the library folder (using omnidisksweeper) and checked the content on iCloud. Unfortunately when i delete the map residing in the Library it also gets deleted in iCloud (double checked it via my iPad)

Seems to me that the automated optimisation of iCloud storage is not properly managing shared storage. (???)

I have 2TB of iCloud storage (just about 770GB actually used) but it seems that once a file 'passes' via my macbook to 'some destination' or files are viewed on the macbook a local version is stored. (in the hidden library)

It does not make sense to me (or better 'i don't understand' how things are managed)

At least the problem is identified, only need to find a way to 'unload' this (to my point of view) garbage on my SSD.

The sole reason for purchasing iCloud storage is to store excessive data and provide sufficient space on my SSD to use for daily operations. Now it seems i am running into the capacity limit of the macbook due to a bunch of crap stored i a hidden map. (as long as i have an internet connection i can get to my iCloud storage so there is no need to store it "double")

Thank you for the information.

My 500GB HD actually seems to be occupied for 481GB (so nearly "full")

I was trying to determine the size of my "library" (as found in some posts that the problem might be found in that area)

After a long time i finally got the result for "Library" and unfortunately this seems to be the area the problem resides.

To my understanding 399GB is on disk and the total size seems to be about the size of my iCloud storage.

Could this indicate that a large number of files is actually "on" my HD AND in my iCloud storage?

(I recently copied a large number of holiday pictures and videos from iCloud storage to a local NAS)

There is next to nothing in the home folder some i will not save any storage capacity.

My goal is to remove garbage stored on the SSD, it appears most of my SSD is occupied with files allready stored on iCloud. I don’t need the copy of files stored on the drive. Meanwhile my internal drive has reached a critical status!

Using less than 50GB of required data on a 500GB drive should not lead to critical storage messages!

Is this the user's Library in the /Home/ folder? What is the size of your HDD? It would appear there is some sort of oddness in what you have shown. You say the HDD is 500GBs, yet the Library folder you have shown has 771GBs. Obviously, this isn't possible. I suggest you try repairing the disk.

Repair the Drive for El Capitan or Later

  1. Restart the computer and after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears.
  2. Select Disk Utility and press the Continue button.
  3. Then select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the side list.
  4. Click on the First Aid tab in the toolbar and wait for the Done button to activate. Click on it, then quit Disk Utility.
  5. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

Does your computer have an SSD or an HDD? If the latter do not use APFS.
