The grab utility has disappeared. How do I get it back?

I just installed the latest software update and the super useful Grab.app utility (which normally lived in Applications|Utilities) disappeared.

I use this app several times a day and would have happily never updated my OS again to keep it. Is there any way to get this back and un-ruin my computer?

Hi,

Thanks, but I found the dreadful "screenshot" app... It's a huge step back (e.g., after opening it from finder, I've got a finder window stuck covering what I wanted to screenshot, and no way to preview the screenshot before deciding whether to save or retake, etc. etc.)

Is there any way to get the actually-useful Grab back? Will it work if I can find another mac and copy the .app file from it?

Hi Mike G! If you're running macOS Mojave, then the Grab.app utility has been replaced by a new app, which is now found here: /System/Library/CoreServices/screencaptureui.app. You start it by pressing CMD+Shift+5. This brings up a panel of options, some new, at the bottom of the screen. This article explains how to use it:

Hope this helps you! Regards, Ian.

I honestly don't know but tend to think not, as the Finder has been extensively re-written in macOS Mojave. But you can but try! Sorry not to have been of more help. Perhaps some more knowledgeable user can help here! Good luck! Ian.

First you don't have to open the Finder. You can just type the normal screen shot function keys such as "command + shift + 3/4" etc. A thumbnail appears on the bottom right of the screen which if you click, opens up the image to edit or save or trash. You can also select where you want to send the screen shot such as the Desktop. Preview etc. It is much more useful and flexible than Grab.

If you still want Grab and still have a backup of High Sierra or know someone that is running High Sierra, you can copy Grab from the Utilities folder.

Can you demonstrate what you mean. I can't find any difference in the screenshots taken before or after.
