Mac Mini (2018) Serious Monitor Issue

I just got the new Mac Mini (2018).

When connecting it to my Asus PG279Q monitor, the handshake between macOS and the monitor will often fail with the following log output:

hidDeviceForLegacyDisplay: failed DSHIDDeviceNewLegacy: failed DSDeviceNew: Failed to create new HID or IIC device for displayID 0x1a49fb02 -[CBDisplayContainerMacOS setupInternalModules]: Failed to create display module for device ID 441056002 -[CBDisplayContainerMacOS start]: failed to start -[BLControl updateDisplaySet:]_block_invoke: failed to start cotainer for display ID 441056002

The result is a black screen, sometimes with a cursor visible. The case is the same using both HDMI and Displayport.

I'm also seeing a lot of these:

WindowServer [ERROR] - Attempting to get capabilities from capabilities with no devices

and these

com.apple.AmbientDisplayAgent Invalid display 0x1a490575

When using Displayport, I'm also seeing a lot of these:

[IGFB][ERROR ] Link loss occurred on port 2 [IGFB][ERROR ] Recovering DP link (6) [IGFB][INFO ] FB1: Complete modeset [IGFB][ERROR ] FB1: Flip called without enabling VBL [IGFB][INFO ] FB1: Restoring gamma

The case is the same in safe mode.

The case is the same in recovery mode.

The case is the same with a clean installation.

I have reported the bug on https://bugreport.apple.com with case ID ***** including a video and further log details, as well as a comparison to a 2017 Macbook Pro, which does not have the issue.

I'm about ready to return the Mac Mini. Please help.

Hi I also had monitor problems with my Mac mini 2018 which I bought in December 2018, 2 weeks ago I had it replaced for another one at my apple store in Liverpool one. I now have no monitor problems. I think there is a fault with some Mac mini's.

My advice, change yours NOW !!!!!

Brief update:

--- Mac Mini 2018 HDMI out to HDMI in, on my AW3418DW is definitely beyond flakey for me. Multiple cables, always the same. Barely works.

but...

--- As one last test, I ordered a USB C to HDMI cable from Amazon. It arrived yesterday. It appears to have solved my black screen issue. Also this cable, would seem to vindicate the AW3418DW. There is a large HDMI head on the Chloe cable I ordered, so I assume there is some small chip in there, which is helping me by getting between the Alienware and the Mac Mini. (Separate issue, but oddly my Mac mini seems to take like 20 seconds to wake up after tapping the keyboard.)

I hear you, I'll return this one, order another. Must have some flakey problem with the HDMI port.

Nah, after about 20 years of being a Mac user, I clearly see how Apple has shifted their attention to other devices. I will continue to use a MBP at work, but I think I’m done privately.

Could be that the Mini 2018 in combination with Mojave 14.1 (but not 14.0) could have an issue with the video card. Mac mini 2018: no start up (terminates signal to monitor)

Search on Ebay/your preferred site for “HDMI A B switch”. Any 2 port should do, will do either/or, with LED indicating which one is active. Avoid splitters. Cost ~ $8.

Length and shielding can both create the issue you’re seeing, especially if the Yamaha is fussy. Connect both sides on the Yamaha with known, good, shorter cables? <= 1m.

Does the U2410 work well standalone without the 2407 connected? And could you link to the Startech converter? I couldn’t find it on their site.
