Well meanwhile I have stumbled on a fix but for my issue but to answer the iTunes version I have is 12.9.0.164 & I was running a 12.1 beta version for the phone...

Now to fix the issue, when I'm in iTunes & I click update or restore, it starts the device over... when the screen goes black, I I mediately disconnect and reconnect so it then recognizes the device is connected otherwise it seems to lose its connection during the restart ... i'm not sure why loses connection but this Quick disconnect reconnect seems to fix it ...
