Mission Control laggy

Since I updated my MacBook Pro (15-inch late 2016, 2.9 GHz Quad i7, 16 GB, Radeon Pro 460) to macOS Mojave 10.14.1 (directly from High Sierra to 10.14.1), I experience some system animation lags.

Particularly using Mission Control: the first time I use it after not using it for "a while" (like 5 minutes), it lags a lot, like if the computer was old or doing a lot of stuff in background. And after the first time, if I re-use Mission Control quickly it doesn't lag anymore. Like if the first time it's "harder" to generate the animation.

Things I already done without success:

  • Reset NVRAM
  • Reset SMC
  • Run Onyx's Maintenance tab

I have a Thunderbolt Display 27 and the problem is present with or without the display connect.

Oh and before you ask, I don't have CleanMyMac.

Anyone has an idea ?

Is macOS Mojave Slowing Your Mac Down? This is How You Can Speed It Up

Mojave may make Macs molasses – The Eclectic Light Company

A Troubleshooting Procedure that may Fix Problems with macOS El Capitan or Later

You should try each, one at a time, then test to see if the problem is fixed before going on to the next.

Be sure to back up your files before proceeding if possible.

  1. Shutdown the computer, wait 30 seconds, restart the computer.
  2. Disconnect all third-party peripherals.
  3. Resetting your Mac’s PRAM and NVRAM
  4. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)
  5. Reset your Startup Disk and Sound preferences.
  6. Start the computer in Safe Mode. Test in safe mode to see if the problem persists, then restart normally. Also, see Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support and Playing Safe- what does Safe mode do?.
  7. Use the Apple Hardware Test to see if there is any hardware malfunction. How to invoke and interpret the Apple hardware tests - CNET.
  8. Repair the disk by booting from the Recovery HD. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears. Choose Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the side list. Click on the First Aid button in the toolbar. Wait for the Done button to appear. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu. Restart the computer from the Apple Menu.
  9. Repair permissions on the Home folder: Resolve issues caused by changing the permissions of items in your home folder.
  10. Create a New User Account Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and enter your Admin password when prompted. On the left under Current User click on the Add [+] button under Login Options. Setup a new Admin user account. Upon completion log out of your current account then log into the new account. If your problems cease, then consider switching to the new account and transferring your files to it - Transferring files from one User Account to another.
  11. Download and install the OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 Combo Update or 10.12.6 Combo Update or Download macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 Combo Update or Download macOS Mojave 10.14.1 Update as needed.
  12. Reinstall OS X by booting from the Recovery HD using the Command and R keys. When the Utility Menu appears select Reinstall OS X then click on the Continue button.
  13. Erase and Install OS X Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:
  1. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
  2. When Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry) from the Device list.
  3. Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's toolbar. A panel will drop down.
  4. Set the Format type to APFS (for SSDs only) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  5. Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
  6. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  7. Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

14. If none of the above helps then see How to Downgrade macOS High Sierra and macOS Reversion- How to Downgrade from High Sierra.

Thanks for the link. Actually the only thing I didn't try was to create a new empty session aaaand… the issue is also there. So I'm pretty sure it's a Mojave bug since I didn't have this before upgrading.

Anyone here has the same issue ? I already filled a feedback to Apple, but maybe there is a workaround (for example with a Terminal command) ?

yes, I have the same problem. Spent 3.000 euros on a 2018 mbp and since I've upgraded osx Mojave 10.14.1 and today 10.14.2 I still have the problem. It lags in animation , launchpad transition between pages scrolling left to right and viceversa, it lags with mission control , it lags with app expose , it lags when resizing windows , it lags in the transition from normal window to full screen and vice versa, it lags in the log in screen, it lags when shifting between full screen apps. I have also an iMac 2017 with the same 10.14.2 osx but it doesn't have ANY of these problem. I'm assuming there are some problems with the optimization of osx for the MacBooks... I've tried everything and don't know what to do.

Yup same problem here guys.

I used to have a Macbook Pro 15" 2017 (Intel Core i7 7920HQ, 3.1GHz, 512GB SSD, Radeon Pro 560) and there was no animation lag at all while I was still using Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.xx.

However, once I upgraded to Mac OS Mojave, I encountered frame drops at random whenever I used mission control. It's weird..., the framedrops didn't happen consistently. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it seems like all the animation is smooth like usual.

Anyway, just today I actually got a Macbook Pro 15" 2018 (Intel Core i7 8850H, 2.6GHz, 512GB SSD, Radeon Pro 560X) and sold my Macbook Pro 15" 2017. Guess what, animation lag is still here!! Woww..., this 2018 15" laptop is $4100 AU here in Australia and for that price I really wasn't expecting this frame drop problem hahaha.

Anyone figured out any solution to this?

Also, Happy New Year guys!!!
