What does SMBD need Full Disk Access for?

It already has access checked. Since this is a default setting I would suggest leaving it alone.
If you enable File Sharing then it will appear. Macs now use SMB for file transfers to other machines.
Full Disk Access is a new security layer in Mojave. Some lower-level pieces of software need full disk access and will automatically be granted these privileges if you turn on that service. I have heard of ssh triggering this. I guess smbd does too. It may depend on how you have smbd configured. I have file sharing turned on and I don't have smbd listed. But then I am only sharing individual user accounts. If you are sharing the entire machine or the root directory, then you may need additional privileges.
I’m going to disable and see what happens. I do not have Shari turn on. I did it one point when I was setting it up and that was it. I wonder if somehow I could be related to virtual box needing access. There I do have shared folders.
I checked my other computer and it does not have SMBD in "Full Disk Access". This is also Mojave 10.14.1.
Not sure if its changed much but it has or something similar has been around even before AFP was deprecated in order to improve transfers with Windows machines.
I do see what you mean. If I delete it out and then turn on file sharing it comes back in even without asking. Is the SMB stack different than in the last 4 versions of MacOS? AFP was deprecated back Mavericks.
It is new to High Sierra and Mojave and is part of the new security.
None of my High Sierra computers (10 or so) have "Full Disk Access" as even an option in Accessibility.
Should I give access to SMBD?
I'll check my other Mojave computer later today.
