Macbook and external monitor

Hello,

I am trying to hook my Macbook pro upto an external monitor. I have tried two adapters, the screen comes on for five minutes and then goes off. I have also tried a different screen and different cables and re-setting my Macbook. Nothing seems to keep the screen on.

Can anyone help me please?
