Unlocking Systems Preference with Administrator Password

My Systems Preferences is trying to unlock Users & Group preferences. I am being asked to enter an administrator's username and password. I am the only user of my MacBook Pro 15-inch Retina display, and I have entered my log in details to unlock the Systems Preference. It's not working. Need to access Systems Preferences (which I always lock after making a change). Can anyone help?

My MacBook Pro 15-inch Retina display (year of manufacture 2013) also has an issue with the screen not booting up even though the boot up sound chimes.. I need to make several attempts to Force Quit - by pressing the power button several times before the screen comes on. Anyone have any suggestions. please?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS High Sierra (10.13), 2.4 GHz Intel Cor i7. 8GB. 1600Mhz

There is a solution - assuming you do not have set a firmware password, and do not have FileVault active.

If that is your case, follow the instructions below.

When your mac reboots after doing these instructions it will act as if starting for the first time; choose not to import anything and follow the indications to create a new user account (which will automatically be an administrator). You will then be able to use this new account to clear the password for your regular account and be back in business.

Start in Single User Mode by holding Command-S at startup.

Then you need to type following commands at the prompt:

/sbin/mount -uw /

rm /var/db/.appleSetupDone

reboot
