How do I prevent Itunes from renaming music automatically?

iTunes automatically changes song titles, artists, album titles, and album artworks to ones with vaguely similar words as if by a half drunk algorithm.

I've looked for this problem's solution thoroughly and it seems a few people have been having my same issue it for like 10+ years, even just recently, and none of the posts were ever resolved or answered, weirdly. I've already turned all the settings for library organizing off in the advanced preferences, and I've redownloaded many of the songs after reinstalling iTunes entirely, and checked the settings again before adding the songs to iTunes, to no avail. I've double checked and uninstalled WMP to make sure it isn't changing them either, not that it changed them anyway bc I could always play the songs there and the titles don't change.

So wth is up Apple? Is iTunes just poorly programmed/coded?

The metadata is stored in a tag. As noted I suspect your issue is caused by multiple tags, which aren't visible using iTunes or Windows Explorer. You would need a dedicated tag editor such as mp3tag to explore in more detail. You might also find MediaMonkey a useful alternative player and organizer.

It seems you've covered this one already, but see Getting iTunes & Windows Media Player to play nicely. WMP does have a feature for auto-updating metadata. In principle iTunes doesn't, but it may on occasion undo edits you've made to items purchased from the iTunes store, reverting to the original metadata shown there. The workaround is to hide those items from your purchase history then make your corrections once more. See also Multiple tags (MP3 files only). If an MP3 file has multiple tags then the tag that iTunes reads or writes to is undefined. It is not unknown for iTunes to apparently accept and apply an edit, then later read back the original values when a track is played for example. iTunes for Windows generated file and folder names are limited to 40 characters.

Assuming that the issue is store metadata taking preference over your own edits then yes. Exactly what sorts of changes are you seeing? I have a bunch of scripts that I can use to organize my library with changes that can be applied systematically. I'm particularly keen on Title Case where every word has an initial capital, which also inevitably has plenty of very specific exceptions. Using a script allows me to confirm that thousands of tracks are the way I want them in just a few minutes. Are you using Apple Music or iTunes Match? These services attempt to match your library with what is in the store so again may link you to someone else's notion of the correct metadata for a particular item.

Can you confirm the problem files are in mp3 format? Can you give a specific example of exactly what you see before and after importing to iTunes? Are the tracks you're going to import set out in standard ..\<Artist>\<Album>\## <Name>.<Ext> form? If so it might be possible to add them to iTunes in a way that makes sure the file path doesn't get changed, clear out any multiple tags, then read in and apply the details from the path.

I have a song called just "Star" for example, and it's an mp3 that I bought and downloaded, bc it's not on iTunes, so iTunes will just rename it to a song that it knows with the word star in it, Starlight by Muse in this case. So it's mostly a problem with songs that iTunes doesn't know about or sell, but it happens with more well known artists and songs too. A lot of songs by Gorillaz and Puscifer for example have almost all of their names changed so I can't even find them when I search for em.

And sorry but isn't it kind of ridiculous that people have to download separate scripts just to reorganize songs that iTunes automatically changed the information of, even though in the settings they've checked a box to disallow that?

Hmm, that isn't the kind of change I see iTunes making. I'm talking about minor changes in capitalisation and whether tracks or album names include say (Bonus Track) which is information I will move to the comments area, or changes to genres. Do you have either Apple Music or iTunes Match? If you see data change as you play a track that suggests an edit outside of iTunes that it has become aware of when it reads the tag from the file.

There are no tags, the metadata is all accurate before I put it into iTunes, and nothing is renamed unless it's added to iTunes, in which case it's always a similar-ish title that is on iTunes, whereas the actual song isn't. Even if I allow WMP to change song info and add one of the songs there, it isn't changed. So it has to be iTunes changing them.

So I guess you're saying yes I am just screwed unless I stop using iTunes or just manually rename everything and make sure to re-rename any affected songs in the future. Thanks for the help.

They are in MP3. "Star" turning into "Starlight" by Muse was an actual example, and it actually has no tags, I checked. And it's just titled the one word, Star.

Is the renaming not a setting that I can simply turn off to fix it? If I have to learn how to complicatedly jerry-rig iTunes just to not ruin my library I feel like I might as well not use it or just deal with it as is, since that's kind of an inherent design problem, at least for me since a ton of my favorite songs aren't on the iTunes store so I have to download them as MP3s.
