Does HomePod support making and receiving FaceTime Audio calls?

My parents are in their mid-80s and aren’t able to operate and iPhone. They also live in an area with poor cell receptio. I was hoping that HomePod supported FaceTime Audio calls so they could initiate and answer calls by their voice alone.

Are FaceTime Audio calls Supported? If so, what other devices must be present for this to work? For example, could an wi-fi iPad work?
