Why can’t my Mac update?

I have a MacBook Air (7,1) running macOS 10.10.5 and I can’t update any higher. I have roughly 90GB of storage and I’ve tried everything. Why can’t it update?

Hello harryhelp,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

I understand from your post that you have not been able to update your MacBook Air any higher than macOS 10.10.5. Make sure that your MacBook Air is compatible for macOS Mojave. The following article will provide you with the information on what is necessary to update your Mac:

Because 10.10.5 is the last update for Yosemite. You're confusing "update" with "upgrade."

The update process is a point release on your macOS version, i.e., 10.10.4 to 10.10.5

An upgrade, is going from one macOS version to a newer macOS version, i.e., 10.10.5 to 10.14.1

You upgrade by downloading a newer macOS version from the App Store app.
