"iTunes has detected an ipod in recovery mode. you must restore your ipod before it can be used with iTunes."
What??
I just got my 2nd gen shuffle today, I put it in the computer and it was fine. It synced some songs, so I know it worked. Just as I was about to disconnect I noticed an update was available for my ipod, I tried to download it and there was an unknown error. It disappeared from the iTunes list. I decided to try it on a different computer because I planned to use a different library anyway. The above message came up, it kept appearing and disappearing from the source list.
I tried it back on the original computer, same thing happened.
The problem is, how do I restore it without using it with iTunes?
And can anyone tell me what recovery mode actually is?
Please help!!

Nope, still no good. It says I need to use iTunes to restore, but the ipod wont work with itunes in the 1st place, unless it gets restored.
i have no idea how else to do it though...

(just a thought, my old ipods had an icon on the start menu that allowed me to restore from there. Why doesn't shuffle restore like that?)

i know what i need to do (restore)
i know how to do it (itunes)
i know why i cant do it (recovery mode)
but i still can't fix it.
why did the update have an error? has it happened to anyone else?
should i just return it and get a replacement?

sori 4 all the extra questions, i just cant understand why there doesn't seem to be an answer. the root of the problem is HOW DO I RESTORE A SHUFFLE WITHOUT USING ITUNES??
    i don't think i can

Reformatting it in Windows XP as FAT-32 and then starting iTunes might get you somewhere...

I'm puzzled, in the context of Windows there was FAT16 and FAT32, is XP different? My actual point was that IF the Shuffle were reformatted, iTunes would want to reformat it once again to the Shuffle's file system organization. It probably doesn't matter what it is as long as it CAN be reformatted by iTunes.

"The iPod (iPod) could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1418)."

i switched it to FAT and opened iTunes again. The same message appeared but this time it allowed me to restore.
    i thought you'd solved it.
then this error message came up, which is essentially the same as the one that appeared when i tried to update (which i think started the problem in the first place). i did it twice

...perhaps its the ipod...should i just send it back and get a replacement?
il put it back to FAT32 and see if it still lets me try to restore.

still no joy. restore failed, with the same message, but i think it got further with the process

    i tried again
    SUCCESS!!! (i dunno how)
while i'm at it, i just noticed before the successful try that i no longer needed an update?
    oh well
thanks for the help, the reformatting seemed to do the trick

lol but i still dont have a way to restore without itunes, hope i never need one.

I had the exact same problem as you (brand new, was loading songs when "update for your iPod is available" came up, once updated it hasn't worked since!). I was just wondering if you could tell me step by step what you did to make your shuffle work again. Unfortuately Fat-32 means nothing to me (I'm not totally tech savy!). How do you change that?

You're already in FAT-32 and you're stuck there forever until you change to a MAC. Seriously, don't worry about it; since you've got XP Pro, it's all taken care of.
