i have been using a external hard drive with my pc to backup, now I have a new iMac. My question is do I have to delete the info that’s currently on the external drive before I use it to backup my new iMac? Or will it just write over the pc stuff? Thank you for your help.

Any drive used for Time Machine should be used only for TM. No partition or other storage on it.
With the drive connected and mounted on the Desktop launch Disk utility, select the volume in the left hand sideline and click on the Erase button.
Then select this:

I was facing this issue a few months ago. The best thing to do is to partition your EHD, and put your files on one partition and another part for backup. The second part can be converted to OS Extended (Journaled)

If you intend to use Time Machine to do your backups then the EHD will have to be reformatted to OS X Extended (journaled) and NOT CASE SENSITIVE.

If I partion it then it would be for windows correct? I no longer have a windows pc. I just want to know if I am able to use this same EHD on the iMac ? And if so, do I have to erase the EHD.
You don't what to use part of a TM drive for storage in a second partition as that part is not backed up if the TM drive crashes. Keep TM drives strictly for TM.
